This is the ampersand I’ve chosen from the Coming Together font.
The fact it is so bold, with bulky serifs, but, still decorative, makes me believe it’s a slab serif. The weigh of the letter is similar in every part of it. The genre of that sign could possibly be a stencil, taking into consideration the white line going through it. Furthermore, it is very hard to distinguish the ‘e’ and the ‘t’ in the design. They merge together, creating a brand new type creature. The sign is also perfect for display in big scale. It is big, easy to spot, attention catching, and makes you think how is it possible that letter as heavy as this one can be so beautiful and decorative....And so very complicated in it’s simplicity.
The very geometric ‘crack’ in the middle of the sign creates the feeling of it being ornamental in some kind of playful way. That feature makes that ampersand original and creative... Like a typographic reflection of an artist. Artists are usually full or ideas, interpretations, but they keep it hidden, so you need to really know them to discover all of them. Same with this symbol. You need to discover its beauty. You can only love it or hate it.
Artists also need much space. They need silence, to be able to drift to their own worlds of imagination. They build a little barrier around them. That is why this ampersand has such bold shape. It needs space, it needs to be alone, only then it can really show its potential. And the white crack is the open door to the creative world.
This symbol is also not good with relationships. Like I’ve said before, it needs to be alone. It would not hold anything together, as the imagination door is always open for it, just in the very middle, and it just cannot help it. Its’s like my very best friend. Different, loving, but not able to hold. Always in its own world, and hard to explain.
If this ampersand was a book, it would probably be most interesting. It would be thick, full of stories, which starting from the very beginning would just grow more and more intriguing, and after reading it you just could not stop yourself from reading it again.
As a dish, it would be this very enormous dinner you get from your loving grandmother. First you think its too much. Then you start eating it, tasting, and discovering that you cannot stop yourself from eating it. It’s just too amazing to stop, because you have never tasted anything like it before.
